Build and pitch an original venture with NFTE in this 3-week entrepreneurship program for middle school students on Yale University’s campus.
Rated 4.3 out of 5 for overall experience by students surveyed across the broader program in 2026.
Course Description
A strong business idea starts with a problem worth solving. Find a need, test an idea, and give people a reason to choose it.
In this course your student will follow a vetted entrepreneurship strategy to spot problems and develop a venture. Customer and competitor research helps them design around people’s needs. A Lean Business Model Canvas maps how the customer, solution, costs, and revenue connect. A SWOT review asks what its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats could be.
Then come the numbers: fixed and variable costs, pricing, revenue, cost and revenue for each sale, and the point where income covers costs. Branding and marketing help students explain why customers should care, and the business workbook and pitch-deck framework bring their choices together. In the Fast Pitch Challenge, evaluated by a panel of judges, they’ll present their venture, answer questions, and hear feedback from instructors and experienced entrepreneurs.
This three-week course for middle school students is part of Summer Discovery’s Institute for the Gifted program on Yale University’s campus in New Haven, Connecticut. The course is available to residential and commuter students.

Why Entrepreneurship Skills Matter
A strong approach to entrepreneurship teaches students to notice problems, investigate what people need, and improve ideas through evidence and feedback. Market research develops careful listening and analysis because a business concept must respond to a real customer rather than an assumption. The Lean Business Model Canvas helps students see how the problem, solution, market, costs, and revenue connect.
Building a pitch adds communication and decision-making practice. Students choose the strongest evidence, explain why the idea creates value, and respond to questions without losing the central point. These skills support school projects, leadership roles, collaboration, and further exploration across business, design, technology, and social impact.
Who Should Attend?
For students who have completed 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.
An idea for a better product or a problem your student wants to solve can be a starting point here. The course suits interests in business, creating things, and helping people, with NFTE tools giving an idea more shape. Collaboration, customer research, basic calculations, and presenting to an audience all contribute to developing one venture.
