Trowel Treasures: Archaeology for Young Scientists

Travel back in time and dig in to explore the secrets of ancient civilizations, hidden artifacts, and the stories buried beneath our feet. This hands-on course introduces students to the exciting world of archaeology, where science, history, and mystery come together!

Students will explore how archaeologists study past cultures through the artifacts, structures, and clues left behind. From analyzing ancient tools to decoding cave art, students will learn how we uncover what daily life looked like thousands of years ago. They'll take part in simulated digs, examine “mystery” artifacts, and learn how archaeology helps tell the story of human history. Along the way, you'll build important skills in observation, analysis, and critical thinking — all while having fun discovering the past in creative and interactive ways.

Example Experiments & Activities:

• Mock Archaeological Dig: Practice excavating with a simulated dig site, document findings, and make inferences.
• Artifact Reconstruction: Piece together “broken” pottery to explore how archaeologists rebuild the past.
• Ancient Technology Lab: Create and test early tools like stone hammers or clay pots.
• Cave Art Project: Recreate prehistoric cave paintings and explore what early art can tell us.
• Cultural Mystery Box: Examine replica artifacts and work in teams to deduce the story of an ancient people.
