Build a pretend stock portfolio in this two-week finance course for elementary and middle school students on the University of Michigan campus.
Course Description
Pick a company, follow its stock price, and watch what happens to a pretend investment. A familiar brand can look different once students examine the business behind it.
In this course your child will build a stock portfolio using imaginary funds. They research companies and industries, read financial reports, and compare investment ideas. Revenue shows what a company earns from sales; costs and debt help tell the rest of its story.
As prices change, students track their portfolio and explain the choices they made. They also explore budgets, credit, and how savings can grow over time. A final presentation brings together their research and results, including what they would rethink next time.
This two-week Summer Discovery course for elementary and middle school students takes place on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Students explore the subject through guided activities and projects.

Why Finance Skills Matter
Following a stock price is only part of understanding an investment. Company research and financial reports help students look behind a familiar name. Comparing the evidence with their portfolio’s results gives them a reason to question an early guess.
Budgets, credit, and compound interest connect that thinking to everyday money choices. Students practice explaining tradeoffs and checking numbers, habits that can help with classroom math and decisions about saving or spending.
Is This Course Right for You?
For students who have completed 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.
This course may appeal to a child who wonders how businesses earn money or likes comparing choices with numbers. Students try investment ideas with imaginary funds, so the focus is on learning and explaining decisions. No real-money investing is part of the course.
