Course Description
Doctor, nurse, hospital administrator, pharmacist, dentist, or vaccine researcher: which role fits which strengths and goals? Students compare careers across medicine and health science while examining the coursework, extracurricular preparation, and professional training required for different pathways.
The course connects careers with major issues shaping healthcare. Discussions address medical ethics, health disparities, biomedical research, healthcare costs and reform, personal wellness, and mental health. Guest speakers and possible visits to University of Michigan medical facilities add perspectives from clinical, research, administrative, and commercial roles.
For the capstone, teams choose a profession and create three or four fictional cases following people from different backgrounds through career decisions. Each case addresses academic requirements, extracurricular preparation, branching paths, wellness, and possible roles in research, leadership, consulting, or biotechnology. Students present the cases and explain their own interest in the selected profession. Discussion, practice, and feedback help students test their reasoning and improve how they communicate the work.
This two-week Summer Discovery course takes place on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The course is available to residential and commuter students. Beyond class, students connect focused academic work with campus life, growing independence, and clearer direction about what students may want to study or pursue next.

The course provides a structured way to compare medicine, nursing, research, administration, biotechnology, and allied health careers. The work also shows how specialists collaborate across roles and communicate important evidence-based decisions to colleagues, clients, organizations, or the public in complex professional settings.

After successfully finishing this course, you will be awarded a certification completion for your accomplishment.
