Build an athlete performance plan in this 3-week sports psychology program for high school students on UCLA’s campus.
Rated 4.7 out of 5 for classroom experience by students who took this course in 2026.
Course Description
Physical talent does not explain everything that happens under pressure. Look at the thoughts, routines, relationships, and surroundings that can change a performance.
In this course you will investigate motivation, confidence, focus, self-talk, emotional regulation, teamwork, and recovery through mental-skills practice, video analysis, team challenges, and cases. Write goals, reframe an unhelpful thought, build a visualization script, and examine routines for focus and recovery.
Wearables and performance data raise questions about privacy, consent, and over-monitoring. Athlete identity, branding, media pressure, and crisis response show how performance connects with life beyond competition.
As a team, act as sport psychology consultants for an assigned athlete. Identify challenges, propose evidence-based responses, decide how to measure progress, and revise after peer feedback. Your final presentation brings the recommendations together around the athlete’s needs. An individual reflection connects that process with another high-pressure setting you know and a useful practice to try next.
This three-week course for high school students takes place at UCLA in Los Angeles, California. The program is developed by UCLA and offered in partnership with Summer Discovery. Residential and commuter options are available.

Why Mental Performance Skills Matter
Mental-performance skills give students a structured way to examine what happens before, during, and after a demanding moment. Goal setting clarifies what can be controlled. Self-talk and visualization exercises show how preparation affects attention. Recovery planning connects sustained performance to sleep, stress, and emotional regulation.
The consultant framework adds disciplined reasoning. Students must identify a challenge, explain why it may be happening, recommend a specific response, and decide how success would be measured. Team cases strengthen listening and communication because an athlete’s needs cannot be reduced to one statistic. These skills transfer to academics, performing arts, leadership, and other high-pressure settings as well as sport.
Who Should Attend?
For students who have completed 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade.
A great performance one day, a struggle the next: if that difference makes you curious, this course looks at the person behind the result. Sport, psychology, health, technology, and media all offer ways into the question. Mental-skills practice and team cases let you explore how people support improvement, including roles beyond competition and coaching.
You don’t need to compete at a high level or plan to become a professional athlete. Pressure and wellbeing are part of the discussion.
