Step into the front office through sports business challenges in this 2-week program for middle school students on Georgetown University’s campus.
Course Description
A player’s stats can shape a roster decision. A stadium design can change a fan’s day. Try the choices that keep a sports organization running.
In this course your student will explore the work of owners, general managers, coaches, agents, and other front-office roles. Player-evaluation challenges put data to use in mock drafts and negotiations. Contracts, trademarks, sponsorships, and name, image, and likeness show how athletes’ rights connect with the business of sports.
Designing elements of a stadium and fan experience brings safety, planning, and service into the picture. Team projects explore international growth, brand partnerships, and sports organizations’ responsibilities to their communities. In simulated press conferences, students will explain their choices and answer questions about them. Money, law, marketing, analytics, and operations become decisions they can try, rather than just jobs behind the game.
This two-week course for middle school students takes place at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The program is developed by Georgetown University and offered in partnership with Summer Discovery. Residential and commuter options are available.

Why Sports Management Skills Matter
Sports management shows students that a team is also an organization with budgets, contracts, employees, facilities, audiences, and responsibilities. Decisions about a player or event require both performance information and an understanding of risk, cost, and team goals.
Explaining choices in a press conference adds communication and accountability. Students practice using evidence, anticipating questions, and working with teammates under time constraints. These skills transfer to leadership, business projects, mathematics, media literacy, and collaborative problem-solving.
Who Should Attend?
For students who have completed 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.
Sports fans who wonder how teams work beyond the game have plenty to explore here. It also suits students drawn to statistics, creative event planning, media, or leadership. Your student will negotiate, design, and make choices with classmates, then explain the thinking behind them. No playing experience or prior business coursework is required.
