Course Description
A broken arm, an asthma attack, or a diabetes diagnosis can bring several healthcare professionals together. Each person has a different part to play.
In this course your student will explore how medicine connects patient care with community health. Clinical and emergency care, biomedical research, public health, genetics, administration, and ethics offer different ways into the subject. In a healthcare team challenge, they’ll work from a patient scenario and identify the physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, assistants, and others who could help.
Cases, discussions, simulations, and hands-on projects reveal how those teams share information and make decisions around a patient’s needs. Guest speakers may join when available. For a Healthcare Career Project, your student will investigate a profession, explain its role and training, and connect what they find with their own interests. They can follow a new question without needing to choose a career just yet.
This two-week course for middle school students takes place at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The course is available to residential and commuter students. The program is developed by Georgetown University and offered in partnership with Summer Discovery.
What You Will Do
• Build a healthcare team map for a patient scenario
• Compare clinical, research, public health, and administrative roles

• Apply problem-solving to age-appropriate healthcare cases
• Investigate the education and work of one healthcare profession
• Create and present a Healthcare Career Project
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Compare the work of clinical, research, and public-health professionals
• Use research to explain the preparation and responsibilities of a healthcare role
You’ll leave with your Healthcare Career Project and a certificate of completion.
Why Healthcare Skills Matter
A patient’s team can include people a student has never met at an appointment. Mapping those roles shows why specialized knowledge and clear communication both matter.
Working through a case helps students identify useful information and explain a choice. Considering prevention, research, and public health also connects individual care with the needs of a community, giving scientific questions a human purpose.

For students who have completed 6th, 7th, or 8th grade.
For students curious about the people behind an appointment or the science behind care, this course opens up a broad view of medicine. Your student can explore patient scenarios with classmates, ask questions, and investigate a role that catches their interest. They’ll share what they learn through a career project, with space to discover which parts of healthcare they want to explore further.
