Collect clues and investigate a simulated case in this 2-week program for middle school students on Georgetown University’s campus.
Course Description
How can a small clue change an investigation? Students explore how scientific methods help people examine a crime scene and test possible explanations. The course emphasizes observation, evidence collection, documentation, and the difference between what a clue shows and what an investigator thinks it might mean.
Hands-on activities introduce trace evidence, fingerprints, handwriting, and photographic evidence. Students compare samples, record patterns, and use real-world case studies to see how several pieces of information can support or challenge a theory. Laboratory-style work builds care, patience, and attention to procedure.
As the course progresses, students combine findings to solve age-appropriate investigative problems. Discussion and reflection help them explain their reasoning, listen to alternative interpretations, and revise a conclusion when new evidence appears. The focus is not guessing the answer first. It is building a case that another person can follow.
This two-week course takes place at Georgetown University. The course is available to residential and commuter students. Beyond class, students connect focused academic exploration with campus life, growing confidence and independence, and clearer direction about interests students may want to explore next. The program is developed by Georgetown University and offered in partnership with Summer Discovery.
A supplemental course fee of $95 applies.

Why Forensic Science Skills Matter?

Who Should Attend?
This course is for middle school students who have completed 6th, 7th, or 8th grade and are curious about mysteries, science, evidence, or how investigators solve cases. It fits students who enjoy noticing details, comparing patterns, and asking what information supports an explanation.
Participants should be ready to work carefully, follow directions, collaborate, and discuss more than one possible interpretation. No previous forensic science experience is required. Students who enjoy hands-on investigation and explaining how they reached an answer will be a strong fit.
