Personal Finance & Investment

This class is designed to provide students with an introduction to the world of investing so they can take control of their finances and make their money work for them. Throughout the course, they will cover the basics of investing and saving, including stocks and bonds, and will explore credit and investment. Examine models to show where you can end up if you start investing at age 20 vs. 25 vs. 30 - the difference is huge! Additionally, the class will discuss the difference between the NYSE and the NASDAQ, and how to deal with interest rates in an easy-to-understand way. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about how corporations and businesses manage their capital through topics like corporate financial analysis, financial planning procedures, and commodities trading. They will even get to invest some imaginary money to discover their risk tolerance level in a stress-free way. By taking this class, students will learn valuable skills that will help them make informed decisions about their financial future to build confidence in their ability to navigate the world of investing and their personal finance and entrepreneurship goals.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course:

1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of fundamental concepts in personal finance, including budgeting, saving, investing, debt management, and the importance of establishing and maintaining good credit.
2. Students will develop foundational skills in entrepreneurship, such as identifying business opportunities, creating business plans, understanding market dynamics, and evaluating financial risks and rewards associated with starting and operating a business.
3. Students will learn how to make informed financial decisions and set short-term and long-term financial goals based on their personal values, priorities, and aspirations, while considering factors such as income, expenses, risk tolerance, and time horizon.
4. Students will understand the ethical and social responsibilities associated with managing money and conducting business transactions, including the importance of financial integrity, transparency, and accountability in personal and professional contexts.

Capstone Project

Develop a comprehensive personal financial plan that outlines short-term and long-term financial goals, budgeting strategies, savings and investment plans, and debt management strategies.
