Whether you are fascinated by the science behind how things work, have a passion for structures and design, or have plans for a future as a mechanical engineer, this course is for you.
Michigan offers 2- and 3-week sessions. During course registration, students will choose one course for each week they are enrolled.
Instructor:
Course Description
Through a dynamic blend of lectures, hands-on exercises, and design projects, students will learn how to apply the principles of physics, mathematics, and material science to craft innovative solutions. Course topics will include structural and materials analysis, design, manufacturing processes, electricity, and thermodynamics. From developing machines and devices that optimize manufacturing processes to designing systems for energy conversion and transportation, this course will test critical thinking skills, ingenuity, and engineering prowess. There just might be a few future mechanical engineers among us!
*Supplemental course fee of $195 for lab materials.
Learning Outcomes
Students will design and build a functional miniature automated system integrating elements of design, electricity, thermodynamics, and material science that showcases their understanding of mechanical engineering principles and their ability to innovate beyond the classroom. The final day will be dedicated to presenting their projects, highlighting the problem-solving process, design rationale, and the system's functionality.
