Do you love watching crime shows and listening to the latest whodunnit podcasts? Criminal Psychology will let you in on the inner workings of the criminal mind to understand what drives some people to commit crimes and how our criminal justice system handles acts of crime.
Michigan offers 2- and 3-week sessions. During course registration, students will choose one course for each week they are enrolled.

Course Description
This course will examine the different theories of criminal behavior: psychodynamic, biological, genetic, social learning, behavioral, cognition, developmental and cultural issues in criminal behavior, sociological theories, violence and aggression, sex offenses, and the role of substance abuse. Through case studies of some of the most famous criminals, you’ll explore how these theories apply to real-life criminal behavior. This class will also explore how law enforcement uses profiling techniques to help identify and capture individuals who have broken the law.

The microphone is in your hands now! You will research, write, and create your own psychological thriller/true crime podcast. Select and analyze an in-depth case study of one notorious criminal to identify and synthesize complex behavioral patterns and motivations. This criminal may be real or fictional. Conduct a detailed comparison and evaluation of two advanced theories of criminal behavior (psychodynamic, biological, genetic, social learning, and cognitive theories) and how those theories apply or do not apply to your subject. In your episode, be sure to discuss the effectiveness and ethical considerations associated with the utilization of advanced profiling methods in modern criminal investigations.
