Criminal Psychology

Criminal Psychology analyzes what drives some people to commit crimes and how our criminal justice system handles acts of crime. This course will examine the different theories of criminal behavior including psychodynamic, biological, genetic, social learning, behavioral, cognition, and developmental. You will also explore cultural issues in criminal behavior, sociological theories, violence and aggression, sex offenses, and the role of substance abuse. Through case studies of some of the most famous criminals, you’ll explore how these theories apply to real-life criminal behavior. Finally, this class will also explore how law enforcement uses profiling techniques to help identify and capture individuals who have broken the law.

• Examine the intricate relationships between psychological, sociological, and cultural factors that contribute to criminal behavior, demonstrating a nuanced understanding of criminal motivations.
• Evaluate the psychological mechanisms underlying various types of criminal activities, including violence, aggression, sex offenses, and substance-related crimes, through comprehensive case study analysis.
• Describe the fundamental principles of criminal profiling, explaining how psychological insights and behavioral patterns assist law enforcement in understanding and identifying potential criminal actors.
• Apply interdisciplinary knowledge to interpret the psychological, social, and environmental factors that interact to influence criminal decision-making and behavioral patterns.
