Course Description

Experience an engaging and hands-on opportunity where students investigate all aspects of a real-life entrepreneurial venture, starting with opportunity recognition, idea generation, and innovation. Whether you're looking to start your own business or work in a leadership role in an established company, the knowledge and skills you'll gain in this course will be invaluable. Course topics may include persuasive communication, relationship building, overcoming change aversion, marketing and sales, negotiation, financial analysis, and legal structures. Students will also explore the 5 Ps of business: product, price, promotion, place, and people. Understanding these key elements is essential to develop a successful strategy and business plan. With the global economy constantly evolving, it is essential for entrepreneurs to understand how to navigate international markets and adapt to different cultures and business practices. Through the lens of their own business ideas, students will prepare an elevator pitch and a business one-pager, two essential tools for any entrepreneur looking to attract investors or customers.

Learning Outcomes

Upon Completing this course, students will be able to:

Identify opportunities, generate innovative ideas, and apply creative problem-solving skills to real-life entrepreneurial ventures.
Analyze and apply the 5 Ps of business—product, price, promotion, place, and people—to develop effective business strategies and plans.
Practice persuasive communication, relationship building, and negotiation techniques essential for successful entrepreneurship and leadership.
Learn the basics of financial analysis and legal structures, gaining the skills necessary to assess the feasibility and sustainability of a business.
Create and deliver an elevator pitch and a business one-pager, demonstrating their ability to attract investors or customers while adapting to global markets and diverse business practices.

Instructor Bio

For the past two years, Kristi Riggs has had the privilege of teaching Public Speaking and Entrepreneurship at the Georgetown University Summer Program, a role she truly enjoys. Her educational background includes a Bachelor’s in Communication and Digital Technology from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and a Master’s in Communication, Culture, and Technology (CCT) from Georgetown University, where she also completed Graduate Certificates in Journalism and Teaching. Kristi is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Liberal Studies (DLS) with a focus on international migration and gender studies.

Professionally, Kristi has worked for organizations like the United Nations Association, the U.S. Department of State, and the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, where her roles have required strong communication, cultural awareness, and strategic thinking skills. She has also launched several small businesses, one of which has continued successfully outside her teaching career, giving her firsthand insight into the entrepreneurial journey. Kristi looks forward to sharing these experiences and skills with her class in an interactive learning environment, where real-world applications will be woven into every lesson.
