Essentials of Finance

The Wharton Essentials of Finance program (formerly Global Young Leaders Academy-Finance), launched in 2019 provides current high school students from around the globe with a two-week summer experience at Wharton focusing on finance and investment. With the guidance of Wharton faculty and PhD students, participants will explore all aspects of finance, from the time value of money and corporate finance, to ethics and investment decision-making. Students will trade on Wharton’s Online Trading & Investment Simulator — using real-world market data without risking real money — and develop and deliver a team-based investment project. In addition to rigorous course work, students collaborate closely in smaller teams, experience campus life, develop relationships with classmates from around the world, and discover Philadelphia and other local destinations.

Who Should Take This Course? High school students with some knowledge in economics and/or business who are looking to gain a foundation in finance and investing
Highlights Attend virtual lectures and presentations from notable Wharton faculty, lecturers and PhD students in Wharton’s Jon M. Huntsman Hall. Work in teams to create and present an original final project, which is judged by Wharton faculty and business professionals. Advance their understanding of business through lectures, recitations and simulations. Explore historic Philadelphia and experience life in a college dormitory on an Ivy League campus.
Courses & Academies The Essentials of Finance Program is an all-day, intensive two-week summer program. Class runs from 9 AM - 5 PM and students will be assigned homework and team projects outside of class hours. Students will receive a certificate of completion from Wharton at the end of the program.
