Penn Law Pre-College Academy

The Penn Law Pre-College Academy is a rigorous academic program that gives high school students the opportunity to experience law school at a world-class university. This 3-week intensive academy not only provides a well-rounded introduction to the American legal system and how law is practiced in the United States, but also allows students to pursue their own interests during the third week in one of two specialized fields of law: Business & Entrepreneurship Law or Human Rights and Legal Advocacy.

Week One & Two:

Students will spend the first two weeks of the academy taking an accelerated first-year law school curriculum including courses such as:

  • Contracts – contract formation, offer and acceptance, consideration, and remedies.
  • Torts/liability – legal duties, breach, causation, damages, and product liability.
  • Constitutional Law – First Amendment rights and Fourth Amendment protections.
  • Criminal law – criminal intent, criminal procedure, burdens of proof, and defenses.

Through the study of these doctrinal legal subjects, students will gain an understanding of the American legal system, develop legal reasoning skills, and experience the Socratic Method of dialogue with Penn Law professors.  With that foundation in place, students will also hear lectures on the cutting-edge legal issues that are shaping America today from Penn Law’s fully tenured professors.

Week Three: (choose one specialized area of law)

  • Business & Entrepreneurship Law Explore the complex issues surrounding business and entrepreneurship law through lectures, workshops, a negotiations module, and a Shark Tank exercise. From start-ups and intellectual property, to negotiating and drafting agreements, students will gain a firm understanding of the specialized legal areas important to the success of the entrepreneur.
  • Human Rights & Legal Advocacy Examine the institutions, instruments, and cases that constitute the basis for the key issues in contemporary domestic and international human rights. From trafficking in persons and the status of refugees, to transitional justice and gender equality, explore current and pressing civil, political, social, and economic topics in human rights.

The Goal of this Academy is to Help You:

  • Develop communication, analytical, and leadership skills.
  • Learn how to craft a persuasive argument.
  • Gain an in-depth understanding into how law is practiced in the real world and the foremost issues related to entrepreneurship and business or human rights.
  • Develop a strong foundation for success in the pursuit of a career in law, business, activism, international relations, or public policy.

You will receive a “Certificate of Completion” from the University of Pennsylvania Law School at the end of the program.
