If you are an international student who wishes to attend an American university, you know that the TOEFL is one of the most important requirements to meet. And here at Summer Discovery, our ESL (English as a Second Language) & TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) courses allows students who are learning English to get a head start over their peers, thus leading to potentially better scores on the TOEFL exam. Please also explore our full-day English Language Institutes.
This multi-skills course is taught by instructors who have experience teaching high-school ESL students in local Los Angeles schools. The course addresses all language skills – speaking/writing and listening/reading – in a dynamic and informative way. Class activities are designed around cross-cultural themes that universally engage teenagers. (Note that this class is not appropriate for basic level students.)
Sessions 1 & 2: $295
This practical course familiarizes advanced non-native US college-bound teens with the iBT (internet-based test) TOEFL; specifically, select sections of the test. On the first day of class, an assessment will be given to each student, and they will then be divided into groups based on their language level. This course is primarily for advanced students, although some intermediate students can be accommodated. This is not an appropriate course for basic students. The iBT TOEFL text is required and costs approximately $75. Students also have the option to purchase audio scripts that come with an “answer key” for approximately $70. (Note that this class does not include taking the official iBT TOEFL test.)
Sessions 1 & 2: $295 / Students are required to bring a laptop for this class.
This course is designed for international students who are proficient in English but need to upgrade their writing skills. This practical writing course enables non-native English speakers to meet the required standard of writing for exams and coursework. International student writers choose words, create sentences, link paragraphs and weave in evidence, all of which are more difficult in an unfamiliar language. With a focus on accuracy, the course will cover essential academic writing skills (researching, proper referencing and revisions), different writing styles (from CVs and letters to formal essays) and the dangers of paraphrasing and plagiarism. Each stage of writing is demonstrated and practiced – from note-making and planning through to rewriting and proofreading.
