Instructors
Shonagh Speirs

Shonagh Speirs is a clothing designer and production consultant living in Austin, Texas.

With over 15 years of creative pattern cutting and design experience, Shonagh offers custom clothing design for individuals, musicians, and the entertainment industry as well as production consulting services to designers and clothing brands.

Her background as a designer and educator has informed her consultancy. After working as an assistant pattern cutter to Roland Mouret and as a design assistant at Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, Shonagh built and launched the 4-year undergraduate fashion design degree program at the Glasgow School of Art. From there she launched her own line, Being Apparel, and began offering her services to performers and to other independent labels.

As a custom designer, Shonagh takes her clients’ design inspiration and executes the design process from start to finish, from pattern cutting to sourcing materials to selecting stitch types.

She applies a similar methodology as a consultant, guiding clients as they create their lines and connecting them with production resources. Shonagh has specialized in the creation of silhouettes, and works sculpturally using traditional couture and experimental pattern cutting techniques to construct unique forms and applies different processes depending on the project and goal. This art-based approach compliments commercial flat or 2-dimensional pattern cutting techniques, which are more commonly used for commercial purposes.

In addition to personal design work, and private clients, some of the brands Shonagh has worked with include Being Apparel - Lila's Perfumes - Lady Captain - In Plain Sight - Caliche Road - Jessica Thomson (@audience.jess) - Missio - Angélica Rahe - House of Land.
