At Summer Discovery, we are all about making a difference in the lives of students like you. The Discovery Works Community Service Program is designed for you, the high school student, to effect positive change in the state of California. When you volunteer at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and around suburban Los Angeles, you will earn 40-45 community service hours while helping organizations that serve families, schools and the underserved in the community. This is a rewarding experience that will enrich your summer. With Summer Discovery on your college application, you can make a difference that will stand out and above the competition.
Through the Discovery Works Community Service Program, you will experience the invaluable opportunity to help renowned service organizations make a difference. In the past, service opportunities included: the Boys & Girls Clubs of Venice and the mentoring of underprivileged kids; the restoration of the picturesque coastline with “Heal the Bay”; preparing and serving meals for families who stayed at the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House; and the building of an edible garden in local schools through “Enrich LA.” Summer Discovery students may have the opportunity to work with other organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Midnight Mission, LA Food Bank, and United Cerebral Palsy of Los Angeles, Ventura & Santa Barbara Counties. Our courses are geared toward high school students and specified to fit the learning styles considered most effective for young adults.
Due to the time commitment involved with this program, no other courses may be taken in conjunction with Discovery Works. Members of this program meet daily (Monday through Thursday) in the morning and afternoon, in and around West Los Angeles.
By gaining firsthand experience at how organizations dedicate their time to serve the underprivileged and underserved in the Los Angeles area, you, as a student, will have an advantage over your peers. It’s an incredible opportunity to put you on a path for success at a young age. Your experience at Summer Discovery will make you a more well-rounded, knowledgeable individual with enhanced academic and life skills.
