Hi Summer Discovery Friends and Families!
Time flies quickly especially with so much going on here in toasty Austin, TX. This week we’ve been experiencing some scorching summer temperatures ranging in the high 90s with some humidity as well. As this week comes to a wrap, here is some insight into what our Summer Discovery students have experienced so far as well as diving into all the fun they’ve had throughout the week!
We kicked Monday off with getting our students ready for their first taste of the college life here at UT Austin. Right after a quick breakfast at the Callaway House Dining Hall, students quickly met up with their RC who then lead them to their classrooms on campus. No worries though, all students made it to their first day of classes right on time! Afterwards, students had some free time and got to explore the many dining options available on campus and on Guadalupe St. Many checked out the In –n- Out Burger and CAVA restaurant for a quick bite to eat after class. Finally, they finished their first day strong by finding their second class of the day. After a quick dip in the pool and nap after class, students finally got the opportunity to explore what Austin, Texas is all about.
On Monday after class, students were given the option in doing laser tag or eating at the infamous Gourdoughs doughnuts. Students immersed themselves in the one of a kind 3 story laser tag arena and got to compete against their new friends. Shout out to one of our students, Bryce, who happened to unexpectedly rank number 2, having one of the highest laser tag scores all day. Some of our other students got to check out the Texas infamous Gourdoughs Doughnuts. What are Gourdoughs doughnuts you ask? They are donuts with attitude ranging with different toppings including jalapeños, cream cheese, and fresh cut strawberries.
On Tuesday, students got to explore more of what Texas has to offer such as the Texas Memorial Museum, the Barton Square Mall and Bowling at the Underground on campus. Then on Wednesday, students got to venture out and learn about the history behind the home of the Longhorns Football Team, Darrell K Royal Stadium. At the stadium, students got the chance to sit in the broadcasting center as well as hanging out on the end zone and immersing themselves onto the field. Students also participated in bingo night as well as going on an Urban Adventure Quest around the Austin downtown area. We wrapped things
up nicely with some arts and crafts as well as going on the Bat Bridge Tour, the Tower Tour, and escaping the panic room.
Also, some of our students were able to go on many fieldtrips related to their class as part of their curriculum. Some fieldtrip highlights included having our Medicine focused students go to the UT Austin Medical Center and getting a taste into what it was like to be a doctor. Our Fashion students also got to explore the world class fashion industry here in Austin on South Congress St. A street that has inspired fashions worldwide!
We’re about to wrap up a successful week here at UT Austin and looking to many fun experiences this upcoming weekend! On Friday students will venture out to Barton Springs for a dip in the pool, go to San Marcos Outlets and shop, bring their best game to Top Golf and finally wrapping up the day with watching the Round Rock Express Baseball team take on the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.
On Saturday students will venture out on the very hipster South Congress Street and check out all the eclectic Austin shops available, go check out the Austin Duck Tours, and ending the day with Austin’s Park n’ Pizza. Pizza is provided!
In preparation for Monday, on Sunday students will travel out in the heat and make a splash at one of the largest water parks in the USA, Schlitterbahn Water Park, but also take a dip in Gregory Pool, and test their knowledge at Trivia Night!
Overall, we had an incredible first week here at UT Austin and students are starting to bond with each other and build friendships that will last a lifetime!
