The First Days at UPenn!

It's been an exciting weekend here at Penn Summer Discovery! On Tuesday, June 26, about 100 students moved into Rodin College House ready for a summer filled with incredible opportunities and experiences. The Penn Summer Discovery Staff was all hands on deck to not only assist students as they moved into the dorm, but also to pick up and escort students from the airport and train stations as they travelled from around the world.

Once they arrived to campus, the students met with their Resident Counselors and began the orientation process. Students took part in ice breakers with their Resident Counselor Groups before grabbing a bite to eat at The Hill Dining Hall with their group members and Resident Counselors (RC). Later that night, the students were treated with milk and cookies during Sign-In time before getting some much needed rest after a busy day of travel.

The next day, students met with their RC groups to have breakfast together before taking a tour of the Home Area to help students become more familiar with their home for the summer. The tour ended at Levin Hall where Summer Discovery Directors Miranda Chesson and Lauren Schwab and University of Pennsylvania Administrative Director Lauren More directed them through an orientation program to help familiarize the students with the program’s expectations.

After completing orientation, students were given the option to visit the Penn Museum or begin exploring the home area. While many took advantage of seeing the museum, including seeing the Egyptian Mummies and Sphinx, others visited the Penn Bookstore and other campus locations. The students also met with Penn advisors to receive advice and guidance with their upcoming classes and were surprised with popsicles for a quick afternoon pick me up!

As the week continues, the students begin to feel comfortable on and off the campus. RC Group Outings have begun and students have visited nearby arcades, grabbed ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s, visited Federal Donuts, and kept up to date with the World Cup! With more activities coming up, including trips to the movies, visits to the U.S. Mint, and lots of snacks to be had -  it is sure to be a memorable week!

Thank you so much,

Penn Summer Discovery
