Michigan: Our First Weekend

We had a whirlwind first weekend here at Summer Discovery Michigan!

On the Friday, students had the day off from classes and chose between travelling to the world famous Cedar Point amusement park, or to the equally famous Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At Cedar Point students took in the beautiful views of Lake Erie, zipped and zoomed on dizzying roller coasters, and won an abundance of prizes from game booths. For those who just want to rock, the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in Cleveland provided glimpses into the lives and careers of rock’s most prominent artists from The Beatles to Nirvana. The trip did not end there though; the night capped off with games and great food at Dave and Busters.

Saturday kicked off with the option of visiting Sportway, Spicer Orchard, or Rolling Hills Waterpark. At Sportway, students raced each other in go-karting, practiced their swing in the batting cages, and putted around for 18 holes of mini-golf.  Those who went to Spicer Orchard took a tractor hayride to go cherry and raspberry picking. Highlights of this activity included walking the farm grounds and shopping in the gift store, where students sampled homemade fudge, apple cider, and doughnuts. At Rolling Hills Waterpark, students plunged down waterslides and relaxed in the lazy river. Saturday night’s all-group activity was a trip to the movies, and students had their choice of seeing Incredibles 2, Ocean’s 8, Jurassic World, or Uncle Drew.

Sunday wrapped up the weekend with three more activities: laser tag at Zap Zone, a trip to the Toledo Zoo, or a trip to Birmingham, Michigan. At the Toledo Zoo, students saw animals from orangutans, to elephants, to hippos, and everything in between. Students also got to cool off while viewing the indoor aquarium, and even got to feed giraffes! In Birmingham, students got to shop until they dropped at stores such as Lululemon, Francesca’s, and ate lunch in several cafes.

We are looking forward to diving back into classes this week and celebrating the 4th of July! On the 3rd of July, students will attend the Toledo Mudhens baseball game to watch fireworks. Students will have the 4th off from classes, and they will all go to Silver Lake. Another exciting activity this week will be our Thursday evening session of SD Live, when we will be having a hypnotist entertain and captivate our students. Keep checking in for more pictures and updates throughout the week, thanks for reading!
