Michigan: Gearing Up for the Weekend

We are already approaching our second weekend here at Summer Discovery Michigan! It’s hard to believe that students have called the Mosher-Jordan Residence Hall home for two weeks now. It feels like just yesterday that students were arriving to a quiet building, filled with anticipation. Now the hall has turned into a bustling hub of activity, socializing, and laughter. This week we celebrated the 4th of July with a patriotic firework display at the Toledo Mudhens baseball game, a trip to an outlet mall, Zap Zone for putt-putting and laser tag, a hypnotist, and an escape room!

Monday kicked off the week with a return to classes. Three afternoon activities that day included a trip to Zingerman’s Deli for Michigan’s best sandwiches, ice skating and whirly ball.

On Tuesday, all students went to the Toledo Mudhens baseball game and enjoyed the atmosphere of the stadium, dined on funnel cake, and cheered the Mud Hens to a 8-3 victory. Following the game, the crowd was treated to a spectacular fireworks show set to classic rock songs.

On the 4th of July, students had the option of either going to a giant outlet mall, or to Zap Zone Canton to enjoy laser tag and glow in the dark putt-putt. In the evening, students watched the movie Grown Ups outside as fireworks shot off across Ann Arbor. Due to rain, our trip to Silver Lake was postponed to this Saturday.

Thursday was filled to the brim with field trips and activities. The Business and Entrepreneurship Academy took a field trip to Ten Thousand Villages, a company dedicated to the fair trade market which brings handmade products from countries across the world to the United States. After class time, activities began with a tour of the Big House, Michigan’s football stadium. Another group went to the Clueless Escape Room, where students used clues to solve puzzles and progress through a series of rooms with the goal of “escaping.” In the evening we had our second Summer Discovery Live! activity, a hypnotist show by Hypno Mike. The hypnosis process was explained, and then several volunteers were lulled into a sleep-like state. Laughter and fun ensued as students watched their classmates perform hilarious behaviors and then fall back asleep at the drop of a hat. The show ended with the volunteers doing a memorable synchronized dance number while under hypnosis. After returning to MoJo, the evening wrapped up with a lively ping pong tournament.

Tomorrow’s line up of activities includes trips to Putterz Golf, a 7 versus 7 football game, Bingo, and an all group outing to Skatin Station. Saturday’s main event is going to be an all-group outing to Silver Lake. Sunday’s options include journeys to the Detroit Tigers baseball game versus the Texas Rangers or ice skating. We are very excited for the weekend to come, and we look forward to keeping you updated with more news and pictures! Stay tuned!
