This post was written by a student in NYC interning in Journalism:
So far, New York City is just what I imagined it would be, and more. As cliché as that may sound, these past few days I have seen things that I had only before seen on Friends. I, and my fellow interns, have been spending the past few days walking in the footsteps of Rachel, Monica, Ross, Joey, and Chandler, visiting the Oculus and 9/11 Memorial in the shadow of the Freedom Tower, strolling through City Hall Park, and eating dinner underneath the Plaza across from Central Park.
As I go through everyday, I feel as if I am assimilating into the New York culture, commuting to and from my internship with the working men and women of the city and, hurrying to always be early while still being able to grab my breakfast. While the subway was daunting at first, we all are starting to get the hang of it, although there is the occasional confusion between uptown and downtown lines.
At my internship, I had the opportunity to work directly with an accomplished journalist. In only one day, she has already taught me so much about not only the profession of journalism, but also the importance of storytelling, and even knowing how to deal with rejection. During my first day, I already was able to interview individuals, put together blog posts, and brainstorm new ideas with my extremely talented supervisor. I am so excited to see what else I will learn over the next month.
