Culture and Cuisine in London

It’s been another beautifully busy British weekend here at Summer Discovery London! Our weekend began Friday night with a “Night of Fun.” Students could pick from going to see a movie: Toy Story 4 or Lion King OR taking a trip to the bowling alley at the O2. It was a great way to relax after another week interning in the big city.

Saturday gave students a chance to dive into the culture that makes London truly unique. In the morning, students visited the Tower of London where they were able to see the crown jewels and the magnificent ancient fortress. Afterwards, students could choose to tour Arsenal stadium, take in the political splendor of Parliament, or shop at Oxford Circus. All three groups met up to finish the day with exploration in Piccadilly Circus. In the evening, students had the opportunity to take the Emirates Airlift over the Thames to take in London during sunset.

If the weekend wasn’t jam-packed enough, Sunday was another busy day. Interns could choose one of two tracks: Museum or Market. The Museum group visited two wonderful, historical museums: the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum. They were able to enjoy historical marvels from throughout the former British Empire and a historical perspective on design. The Market group visited two iconic markets: Portobello Road market in Notting Hill and Old Spitalfields Market in Shoreditch. Students had a fun time eating their way through the day, while checking out antiques and clothing for sale as well.

While our interns were out and about, a new batch of business students arrived from around the world. They got settled and had orientation, before heading out on their first activity: the Top of the Shard. At 95 stories and 1,016ft, The Shard is the tallest building in the EU. Students got an unparalleled view of London. It was an opportunity to take amazing pictures and make new friends. Everyone returned back to the residence in the evening for ice breakers and meeting with their RC group.

There is much excitement for the next two weeks- getting to know our business students, watching our interns thrive at their placements, and truly taking in all London has to offer!
