Special pick up/orientation for late arrivals

Tuition includes: Term fees, academic and enrichment program, use of facilities, housing, 3 meals daily while on campus (2 meals on weekends), recreation access, activities, trips and excursions per catalog, blanket and pillow, and sheets and towel with weekly linen exchange.

Not included: Airfare, airport transfers (Available for $40 each way), books and classroom materials, course supplements, $400 for 1 college credit class or $800 for two (6 week program only), meals eaten off campus, medical expenses, laundry, souvenirs, and personal spending money ($100-$150 per week suggested).

UCLA - Sports & Recreation

As a member of the "Pac-12" Athletic Conference, and home of the 1984 Olympic tennis and gymnastic competitions, UCLA features some of the world's finest athletic and recreational facilities.

Summer Discovery students enjoy full UCLA recreation privileges, and choose from a superb selection of facilities for practicing and playing, at no extra charge (except where noted). It is not unusual to share these courts and fields with some of the world's best athletes. Recently SUMMER DISCOVERY students have volleyed with Jimmy Connors and Stefan Edberg, run a few laps with Olympic champion Jackie Joyner Kersee, and worked-out with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal.

Facilities & Activities

John Wooden Sports & Recreation Center

UCLA’s exciting recreation facility contains 2 gyms for basketball, volleyball and badminton, a dozen racquetball and squash courts, a climbing wall and dedicated rooms for gymnastics, aerobics and dance. Also includes full workout/health club complex with stairmasters, rowing machines and treadmills, and free weights. 

Bruin Brawn

UCLA's world-class weight training facility with Cybex, Nautilus and free weights.

Pauley Pavilion Arena

Home of the UCLA Bruins basketball team. The Pavilion accommodates 3 regulation basketball courts, 6 regulation volleyball courts, and is the summer workout home of many NBA stars.

Sunset Canyon Pool and Recreation Area

A complete aquatic center with a 50-meter Olympic size pool, 25 meter family pool, diving pool, and a large grassy meadow for sunning, frisbee, and volleyball.

Los Angeles Olympic Tennis Center

Completed for the Olympics, the center offers 8 lighted courts and is home to the summer "Mercedes Tournament of Champions" attended by SUMMER DISCOVERY students.

Sunset Canyon/South/Sycamore Tennis Courts

These 3 tennis facilities, with 27 courts, are near our residence hall. A phone call reserves your free court.

Drake Track Stadium

Features a 9-lane 400 meter track and is popular for jogging and power walking.

UCLA Aquatic Center at Marina Del Rey

The center offers sailing, rowing, windsurfing, and other nautical adventures on the Pacific Ocean.

Intramural Fields

These fields are available for softball, soccer, football, ultimate frisbee and golf.

3 WAYS TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR RECREATION/ATHLETIC PROGRAM:

  • Drop-in participation: Informal, non-organized participation including pick-up games, tennis with a friend, working out at the John Wooden Center, rollerblading, our bus to the beach, and recreational swimming, to name a few.
  • Organized intramurals, tournaments and events: Our recreation co-ordinator and our RC's organize co-ed intramurals in several sports, 3-on-3 basketball, 5-on-5 volleyball, tennis tournaments, golf-outings, boat trips, and more.
  • Sports Plus: Students who desire intensive individual and/or team instruction from qualified coaches can participate in our comprehensive Sports Plus programs for: tennis, step aerobics, basketball, sports conditioning and fitness, and water sports. (supplemental fee)

Sports Plus 6 Week Program

Students who wish to extend their participation beyond the regular recreation and athletic program may choose to participate in one or more Sports Plus offerings. Instruction is given by college pros and instructors, high school coaches, and collegiate athletes on a regular basis throughout the program. These programs are offered in cooperation with UCLA Cultural and Recreational Affairs.

Supplemental Fees are subject to revision. Please refer to the Course Catalog that will be available in the spring.

Advanced Tennis Group Lessons

Designed for experienced and c0mpetitive tennis players, this program features personalized instruction, conditioning sessions, strategy techniques and coached play. Meets for 2 hours, 2 times a week.  Bring your racquet, we'll provide the tennis balls. This class must have a minimum of 8 students to run.

Fee: $350 ( 6 weeks), $200 ( 3 weeks, Session 1&2)

Beginning and Intermediate Tennis Group Lessons

Designed for beginners to club level tennis players, this program features personalized instruction, conditioning sessions, strategy techniques and coached play. Meets for 2 hours, 2 times a week. Bring your racquet, we'll provide the tennis balls.  This class must have a minimum of 8 students to run.

Fee:$350 ( 6 weeks), $200 ( 3 weeks, Session 1& 2)

Basketball at UCLA

Improve your game! Concentrated basketball program emphasizing individual skills, game strategy, playing and practice time. Class meets 3 hours per week working with instructors, plus additional game time and the opportunity to watch the stars of the NBA in pick-up summer games. The first class meeting will consist of tryouts to determine proper ability placement. 

Fee:  $300 ( 6 weeks), $175 ( 3 weeks, Session 1)

Intensive Cross Training

Designed for individuals who are interested in serious training, utilizing a number of cross-training activities including sports, fitness machines, outdoor workouts, and weight training.  Weight training includes work with Nautilus, Cybex, and free weights.  

Fee: $95 ( 3 weeks, Session 1)

Watersports Sampler

Get the best of all “water worlds” at the UCLA Marina Del Rey Aquatic Center as you sample and experience the exhilaration of windsurfing, sailing, and the adventure of kayaking all in one course   

Fee: $200 ( 6 weeks) ( This class will only meet for a total of 3 weeks during the 6 week program)

Beginning and Intermediate Surfing

Hang ten dude! Take this tubular chance to learn the sport that is synonymous with Southern California. You’ll be treated to the local hot spots as you learn a sport that is a challenging workout, of agility, strength, endurance, and guts. This class meets 6 hours per 2 week session.

Fee:  $225 ( 6 weeks) ( This class will only meet for a total of 3 weeks during the 6 week program)

Body Sculpting

Balancing muscle strength with cardiovascular training is an important key to optimal fitness. Experience a challenging and dynamic body sculpting workout using dumbbells, exertubes and dynabands as resistance tools.     

Fee: $125 ( 6 weeks), $75 ( 3 weeks, Session 1)

Step Aerobics

Step aerobics is easy and fun, and provides one of the safest and most complete fitness workouts around. You'll learn the basic steps, techniques and terminology of step and have a great workout! No experience necessary. Fee: $125 ( 6 weeks), $75 ( 3 weeks, Session 1&2)

Tae Bo Kickboxing

Experience the hottest workout in America! TAE BO is unlike any other class. You’ll push your body to its limits, and in the process, you’ll stretch and strengthen your will. TAE BO isn’t about how much better you can feel or how much better you can look. It's about how much better you can be. Come and see yourself what all the hype is about.
