Sensational sun, surf, sand and sports combine to create ideal conditions for an active and healthy summer at UCSD. On the beach, UCSD is rated “Best School for Surfing” by Sports Illustrated Magazine. UCSD’s indoor and outdoor athletic facilities are among the best in the world. State-of-the-art facilities include 4 indoor recreation centers (including the 180,000 square foot RIMAC Complex), 2 pools, the Mission Bay Aquatics Center, a golf driving range, climbing wall, abundant tennis courts, playing fields and miles of beautiful beaches.

RIMAC Complex

UCSD’s incredible Recreation Intramural and Athletics Complex features 5 full court basketball courts, indoor soccer, volleyball, raquetball and squash courts, aerobics rooms and the finest in weight and workout machines.

RIMAC Weight Training and Fitness Room

One of the largest and best equipped in the USA. 12,000 square feet of aerobic and resistance machines, climbers, rowers and free weights.

Natatorium Indoor Pool and Jacuzzi’s

Mission Bay Aquatic Center

Featuring sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and waterskiing

3 WAYS TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR RECREATION/ATHLETIC PROGRAM:

  • Drop-in participation: Informal, non-organized participation including pick-up games, tennis with a friend, working out at the John Wooden Center, rollerblading, our bus to the beach, and recreational swimming, to name a few.
  • Organized intramurals, tournaments and events: Our recreation co-ordinator and our RC's organize co-ed intramurals in several sports, 3-on-3 basketball, 5-on-5 volleyball, tennis tournaments, golf-outings, boat trips, and more.
  • Sports Plus: Students who desire intensive individual and/or team instruction from qualified coaches can participate in our comprehensive Sports Plus programs for: tennis, step aerobics, basketball, golf, swimming, sports conditioning and fitness, and water sports. (supplemental fee)

Sports Plus Program

Kickboxing

This high intensity workout improves your strength, health and is a lot of fun. Get ready for some great tunes and a full body workout. Guaranteed to pump your adrenaline level to new heights. Meets twice a week for 1 hour. Fee: $125

Private Tennis Lessons

The best Pro’s give in-depth instruction and evaluations for all levels of ability. 1 or 2 private lessons per week. Very limited enrollment. Fee: $250 / $500

Sports Conditioning and Weight-Lifting

Under the excellent supervision of qualified trainers, a program will be developed for your own abilities using a variety of free weights, Nautilus, and the latest state-of-the-art Cybex and Lido equipment. Additional aerobic machine work rounds out your program. Meets twice weekly for 1 hour. Fee: $150

Step Aerobics

Get into shape to a rockin’ beat on RIMAC’s Aeroba-floor specifically designed to absorb impact. You’ll have the workout of your life in this great room! Meets twice weekly for 1 hour. Fee: $100

Hip Hop Dance

It’s the 70’s all over again! This class revisits “Locking”, “Popping”, and “Breakin’ ”, while incorporating modern freestyle Hip Hop club dancing. This class is taught by “Mr. Animation” who appeared in “Breakin’ II”, the Run DMC video “It’s Like That Remix”, and the movie “Freshest Kids”. Meets twice weekly for 1 hour. Fee: $125

Sand Volleyball

Sun, sand, spike! Learn the sport that started right here on local Southern California beaches. Designed for players who want to learn or improve the skills necessary for this variation of the sport of volleyball. Class meets twice weekly for 1 hour. Fee: $125

Surfing Club

Imagine surfing on those California waves. You’ll experience new waves each week. Meets twice a week for 2 hours. Fee: $250

Wakeboarding

This course offers instruction in the fundamentals of wakeboarding and is tailored to help each individual camper as his/her abilities progress. Classes are designed to target and realize the goals of each individual wakeboarder. Meets twice a week for 2 hours. Fee: $250

Soccer

GOAL!! Learn to shoot, score and much more. Improve your knowledge and skill level of the most popular sport in the world. This program is coached by qualified soccer coaches & players from UCSD & San Diego area. You will engage in game strategy, playing and practice time. Fee: $150

Special Programs in Surfing, Cross Training, and Watersports Sampler

These Education Through Recreation programs meet in the afternoon on campus, La Jolla Beach and the Mission Bay Aquatics Center. They meet in the early afternoon and are regular enrichment courses.
