University of California, San Diego

This awe-inspiring 1,976 acre campus is forested with giant eucalyptus trees, impressive contemporary architecture, 11 libraries, phenomenal athletic facilities, and unlimited California sunshine. The New York Times recently wrote, “UCSD, only 40 years old, has built a global reputation in such diverse fields as bioengineering, genetics, oceanography and the neurosciences. UCSD has five Nobel laureates on its faculty - and has been designated a national super computer center.”

UCSD’s 16,000 undergraduate students study at a family of six colleges that combine the intimacy of a small liberal arts college with the academic resources of a major university. US News and World Report ranks UCSD 7th in the USA among state colleges and universities.

The tradition of learning on this site, dates back to the founding of the Scripps Instuition of Oceanography, the world’s foremost oceanograpic institute.

For Cat in the Hat fans, the imposing Geisel Library at UCSD is named in honor of Theodore “Dr. Seuss” Geisel and contains a large collection of his work and memorabilia. The culturally rich and scenically sensational seaside town of La Jolla is a few minutes from campus. Downtown San Diego is 12 miles south, and 70 miles of beautiful beaches are virtually at our doorstep.

Living and Learning Together in One Residence Hall

All Summer Discovery students live together in one residence hall complex— a special feature of our programs. This enables Summer Discovery students and staff to develop the close-knit community feeling of living under on roof. Although students benefit from the greater university community, they have a distinct “home” on campus, which provides immeasurable social, educational and safety benefits.

Canyon Vista Residence Hall Suites

Summer Discovery students live in the ultra-modern Canyon Vista Residence Hall complex, overlooking the UCSD’s Ecological Reserve. Students are housed primarily in six-room suites, which include double, triple and single bedded rooms, and a lounge and private bathroom/shower facilities. Rooms are equipped with study desks, shelves, dressers and ample closet space. Our residence is adjacent to basketball and sand volleyball courts, Canyonview Aquatic Center with an Olympic-size pool, plus a climbing wall and weight room close by. The residence hall is coed, with single-sex suites. In-house facilities include TV lounge, laundry room, and Summer Discovery office. Next door is the Canyon Vista Dining Commons.

Food For Thought

Summer Discovery students dine in the Canyon Vista Dining Commons. Students are provided three meals a day (2 meals a day on weekends), while on campus, and feature nutritious hot and cold breakfast, salad bar, fresh fruit, vegetarian items, pizza and pastas, and grilled items. Food portions are unlimited.

Health, Safety and Security

  • The health, safety and security of each student is our primary concern.
  • Doctor appointments are arranged with the Student Health Service, the same facility used by UCSD students.
  • For 24-hour/emergency care, students are taken to the UCSD Thornton Hospital on campus.
  • Summer Discovery staff make all medical appointments, transport and accompany students to medical facilities, obtain prescription medications and notify parents after medical visits.
  • Summer Discovery and UCSD Security and Police are on duty on and off campus 24 hours a day.
  • Resident counselors live in the same secure residence hall with Summer Discovery students.
  • For additional safety, there are daily/nightly sign-ins and room checks.
  • In keeping with a collegiate atmosphere, students are permitted to walk on campus and in our “home area” of La Jolla, but are required to be in small groups.

Transportation

  • All buildings and facilities on the UCSD campus are within easy walking distance of our residence Hall. Free Summer Discovery shuttles are available to the village of La Jolla.
  • Summer Discovery maintains a fleet of passenger vans for class field trips and small excursions. For large group excursions chartered buses with professional drivers are used.
  • Summer Discovery provides escorted transfers to/from San Diego Lindbergh Field Airport for $35 each way. Staff meet incoming flights in baggage claim and assist with all departures. Travel arrangements are made through Musiker Tours and Travel, our own travel agency, at the lowest available fares. If students are being driven to Santa Barbara, directions are sent approximately one month prior to the program.
