Established in 1919, UCLA has evolved into a world renowned research center, as well as one of the world’s most ethnically and culturally diverse university communities. This diversity, combined with UCLA’s remarkable educational resources, reputation for academic distinction, athletic excellence, spirited student body, and superb location, create an ideal setting for our pre-college enrichment program.
Located in a residential area in suburban Los Angeles, UCLA is one of the world’s best known and well respected universities. The largest of the nine University of California campuses, UCLA is internationally recognized for its innovative curricula, commitment to community service, and excellence in undergraduate teaching. The UCLA faculty has included three Nobel Prize winners, and over 300 Fulbright scholars.
Noted alumni include Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigrosa; Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Ralph Bunche; actors Corbin Bernsen, Mark Harmon, and Carol Burnett; athletic superstars Troy Aikman, Arthur Ashe, Jackie Robinson, Jimmy Connors, Jackie Joyner Kersee, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar; and Jim Morrison (lead singer of The Doors) who graduated with honors in English. Recent speakers on campus include former President Clinton, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Michael Douglas, and Magic Johnson.

UCLA’s 24,000 undergraduate and 11,000 graduate students study on a beautiful 411-acre campus of which 60% is open land devoted to lush, green fields, tropical trees, flowers and plants. The University is situated at the foot of the Santa Monica Mountains and nestled between the residential communities of Beverly Hills, Bel-Air, Westwood, and Santa Monica —and just minutes from spectacular Pacific Ocean beaches. UCLA offers excellent facilities: a six million-volume library, numerous cultural centers and museums, one of the nation’s finest health care complexes, and some of the world’s finest athletic facilities — many built for the Los Angeles Olympic Games.
All Summer Discovery students live together in one residence hall—a special feature of our programs. This enables students and staff to develop the close-knit community of living under one roof. Although our students benefit from the greater university community, they have a distinct “home” on campus, which provides immeasurable social, educational and safety benefits.
Students live in Hedrick Summit Residence Hall, opened in 2005. Hedrick is located near the beginning of the famed Bruin Walk and adjacent to the UCLA Sycamore Tennis Center. Rooms are 10, 6, 5 and 4 person suites, comprised of singles, doubles and triples , with semi-private bathrooms and air conditioning. Each room features beds and study desks, ample closet space, private telephones, and high-speed internet access (refrigerator rentals are available). Outstanding in-house facilities include a computer center with laser printers, TV/DVD lounges, game room with ping pong and billiards, and laundry room (lessons available). There is also a hotel style front desk and Summer Discovery program office. Steps away are the Sunset Canyon Pool Complex and the new Sunset Village Commons with a coffee house and café.
Summer Discovery students eat in the modern Hedrick dining hall, and receive 3 meals a day (2 on weekends) while on campus. Included daily is a choice of nutritious entrees, low-fat and vegetarian selections , hot breakfast, salad bar, deli bar, pizza oven, fresh fruit, beverages, and a wide selection of desserts and frozen yogurt, with unlimited portions.

- Resident counselors live in the same secure residence hall with Summer Discovery students.
- For additional safety, there are daily/nightly sign-ins and room checks.
- In keeping with a collegiate atmosphere, students are permitted to walk on campus and in our “home area” of Westwood Village, but are required to be in small groups.
- All buildings and facilities on the UCLA campus, and downtown Westwood Village are within easy walking distance of Hedrick Suites. A Summer Discovery Westwood shuttle is available at night.
- Summer Discovery maintains a fleet of passenger vans for class field trips, small excursions and medical transport. For large group excursions chartered buses with professional drivers are used.
- Summer Discovery is pleased to offer assistance in facilitating transportation via car, bus, train or plane.
