Why Michigan?

Renowned for its unparalleled cultural and academic environment, fervent school spirit, and athletic success, the University of Michigan is consistently ranked as one of America’s top ten universities, one of the “Public Ivy’s.” The largest pre-med and pre-law university in the country, U-M excels in the classroom, the laboratory and beyond. Summer Discovery students’ access to the facilities of the university, city of Ann Arbor and its environs offer a superb introduction to college living and learning.

2,3 or 5 Week Enrichment Courses for Students Completing Grades 9,10,11,12

The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

The university has one of the largest research expenditures of any american university. Newsweek magazine rates University of Michigan 11th globally, based on its “openess and diversity” and its “distinction in research”. University of Michigan’s football program ranks first in NCAA history in both total wins and winning percentage.

President John F. Kennedy proposed the formation of the Peace Corps on the Michigan Union steps, Gerald Ford established his presidential library here, and Madonna lived (briefly) in Stockwell Hall. Noted alumni include one U.S. President, three Supreme Court Justices, seven Nobel Prize winners, 25 Rhodes Scholars, eight astronauts, 116 Olympic Gold Medalists including Michael Phelps, and several professional athletes, writers and actors such as Derek Jeter, Arthur Miller, and James Earl Jones. University of Michigan has the largest number of living alumni of any university in the USA. The magnificent 2,600-acre Ann Arbor campus is home to 26,000 undergraduate and 15,000 graduate students, 9 museums, 7 hospitals, an arboretum, botanical gardens, and 225 acres dedicated to world-class athletic and recreational facilities.

Living and Learning Together in One Residence Hall

All Summer Discovery students live together in one residence hall—a special feature of our programs. This enables students and staff to develop the close-knit community of living under one roof. Although our students benefit from the greater university community, they have a distinct “home” on campus, which provides immeasurable social, educational and safety benefits.

Alice Lloyd Residence Hall

Students live in Alice Lloyd Hall located on the popular “hill” section of central campus which overlooks the newly renovated Palmer field and quarter mile track, brand-new tennis courts, and tree-lined courtyard. Rooms are doubles and singles with study desks and chairs, bookshelves and dressers, closets, a window fan, and high speed internet connections. Outstanding in-house facilities include a thirty station computer center, television/DVD lounges, laundry rooms, Alice’s Place Snack Bar, a fully equipped music room and Summer Discovery program office open day and night. Students are just steps away from the Central Campus Recreation Building and the heart of Ann Arbor.

Food For Thought

Students eat in the brand-new Hill Dining Center, part of a $65 million project to improve food service and residential life at the University. The Hill Center offers marketplace-style dining with a huge selection of international foods, pizza ovens, wok station, and late night snack bar. Students receive 3 meals a day (1 on Saturday, and 2 on Sunday) while on campus. Included are low-fat and vegetarian selections, hot breakfast, salad bar, stone-oven pizza, grilled sandwiches, and dessert and coffee bar. Portions are unlimited.

Health, Safety, and Security

  • The health, safety and security of each student is our primary concern.
  • Doctor appointments are arranged with the UM University Health Service by Summer Discovery staff.
  • For 24 hour/emergency care, students are taken to the renowned University of Michigan Medical Center, one of the largest and finest health care complexes in the world.
  • Summer Discovery and University of Michigan housing staff are on duty on and off campus 24 hours a day.
  • Resident counselors live in the same secure residence hall with Summer Discovery students.
  • For additional safety, there are daily/nightly sign-ins and room checks.
  • In keeping with a collegiate atmosphere, students are permitted to walk on campus and in our “home area” of Ann Arbor, but are required to be in small groups.

Transportation

  • Although a 2,600 acre campus may sound quite large, the actual central campus area is significantly smaller. It is a short walk to all of our classrooms, athletic facilities and the town of Ann Arbor. (There is also an extensive, free shuttle bus system operated by the university day and night.)
  • Summer Discovery maintains a fleet of passenger vans for class field trips, small excursions and medical transport. For large group excursions chartered buses with professional drivers are used.
  • Summer Discovery is pleased to offer assistance in facilitating transportation via car, bus, train or plane. Summer Discovery provides escorted transfers to/from Detroit Metro Airport for $35 each way. Staff meet incoming flights in baggage claim and assist with departures. All plane arrangements are made through Musiker Travel, our own travel agency, at the lowest available fares. If you are being driven to Ann Arbor, detailed driving directions are sent approximately one month prior to the program.
