Curricula & Classes

NORTHEASTERN 4 WEEK CURRICULUM

College Credit Classes / Enrichment Classes

Summer Discovery students earn 3 Northeastern University credits for each college credit course taken (unless otherwise noted). Northeastern credits are transferable to most colleges and universities nationwide. College credit and Enrichment classes are offered in cooperation with Northeastern University’s Division of Adult and Continuing Education, and the College or Professional Studies. These classes are designed around the vast resources available at Northeastern and Boston. Classes meet Monday-Thursday for 2 hours, 9:30-11:30am or 1:00-3:00pm. Courses require outside-of-class preparation, and most credit courses have papers, mid-terms and/or finals. In addition, students attend our innovative evening series, “Preparing for College and Life Workshops” which meet 1-2 evenings per week.

Curriculum

Summer Discovery classes are designed around Northeastern’s vast strengths and resources. Most classes are small, informal and personal - encouraging student/teacher interaction. Students have a choice of 6 different curricula, outlined below. College credit is available for all students, including those entering grade 10. Please note: Day Students and students entering grade 10 are not eligible for Curriculum D or E.

Boston Business Training & Internships or DiscoveryWorks Community Service Internships

Students who enroll in Curriculum D or E participate in unpaid internships in a range of fields including marketing, mass-media, education, computer science, advertising, finance, sports, business, retail, hospitality, engineering and more (Curriculum D), and meaningful placements in non-profit organizations (Curriculum E). You must be 16 years old by July 6, 2009 to participate in Curriculum D or E.

Northeastern is renowned throughout the world for its Cooperative Education Program. University personnel will manage this program, using their extensive contacts in the Boston business and non-profit community to obtain internships for students, maintain relationships with employers, work with students to prepare for the internships, and coordinate transport.

Internship = 3 college credits Students who successfully complete the program are awarded 3 Northeastern college credits. In addition, DiscoveryWorks students earn up to 80 hours of Community Service credit.

Week 1: Dynamics of Business or Community Service Internship Training Camp Prior to an internship assignment, students undergo intensive preparation including learning about how for-profit and non-profit businesses work, resumé development, business etiquette and mock interviewing. At the end of the week, students will participate in a meet-and-greet with employers.

Weeks 2, 3 & 4 For three weeks, four days a week (Monday - Thursday), students work at their assigned internships. There are at least 2 or more students placed in each internship (except those that are on campus.) Students are expected to contribute to the workplace through projects and assignments, in addition to attending meetings, shadowing supervisors and learning about the employer organizations.

Special Course Concentrations

Students who enroll in this special program (Curriculum C) combine two college credit courses in either Business, Engineering, Crime/Law, Sports, Leadership, or English Immersion. Taken together, these courses form an intensive program of study with classes meeting in the morning and afternoon. Although it is recommended that both Course Concentration classes are taken together, they may be taken individually with any College Credit or Enrichment course.

Northeastern 2 Week Intensive Business Curriculum

Summer Discovery and Northeastern University are pleased to collaborate to offer an intensive 2 week Boston Business Institute that focuses on Business, Management, Marketing, and Finance.  The program includes classroom sessions, site visits to Boston businesses, and guest speakers from a wide array of fields.

The Best Teachers

Courses are taught by University instructors, graduate teaching assistants, area professionals and top secondary school teachers. Most classes are small, informal and personal - encouraging constant student/teacher interaction. Class size averages between 8-20 students.

“Preparing for College and Life Workshops”

These once weekly workshops focus on contemporary issues and skills that are the keys to a productive high school and college career. Designed to help students bridge the gap between high school and college, workshops feature interactive discussions with peers and professionals about college admissions, decision making, tolerance, stress management, harassment, substance abuse, eating disorders, AIDS awareness, and more.

College Visits and Tours

Summer Discovery students will have the opportunity to visit several colleges in the Boston area. College visits may include: Harvard, MIT, Boston University, Boston College, Tufts, Wellesley, Brandeis, Brown, Babson, Bentley, Rhode Island School of Design, and more. Our annual college fair with admissions representatives from many colleges is a program highlight.
