Why Boston?

Boston is America’s college town. Over 300,000 students from more than 80 colleges call Boston home. One of every five people in the city is affiliated with higher education; making Boston one of the most youthful and vibrant cities in the world. It’s not only Paul Revere and Henry David Thoreau who can trace their roots to Boston, but more contemporary luminaries like Aerosmith, Melissa Etheridge, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. From the Freedom Trail to Faneuil Hall, from the JFK Library and Museum to Newbury Street; Boston is the place for students to live and learn.

Northeastern University, Boston

Located in the heart of Boston, Northeastern University is the “Ultimate Urban Campus”. It is a university transformed - from a night school at a local YMCA in 1898 to one of the nation’s top private research institutions. Northeastern has spent $500 million on new facilities including classrooms, a world-class fitness center, and eleven new residence halls. “When people talk about the hot places to go to college in the Boston area, Northeastern is now mentioned along with Harvard and Tufts Universities and MIT,” hailed The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Home to 14,000 undergraduates from all 50 states and 125 countries, Northeastern’s tree-lined 67-acre campus is situated within walking distance to many of Boston’s cultural treasures including the world-renowned Museum of Fine Arts, Symphony Hall, stylish Newbury Street with its trendy shops and cafes, and Boston’s landmark building, the Prudential Center. It is also close to legendary Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, the Charles River and much more.

The signature of Northeastern University is its world-renowned Cooperative Education Internship Program (Co-op). The result of this combination of classroom study and real-world experience is that more than 50 percent of Northeastern students are offered a job from one of the organizations where they had completed an internship through the co-op program.

Living and Learning Together in One Residence Hall

All Summer Discovery students live together in one residence hall—a special feature of our programs. This enables students and staff to develop the close-knit community of living under one roof. Although our students benefit from the greater university community, they have a distinct “home” on campus, which provides immeasurable social, educational and safety benefits.

West Village Complex Suites

Summer Discovery students live in The West Village Complex, a centrally air-conditioned state-of-the-art residence hall consisting of beautifully appointed suites. Students reside in 4-6 person suites containing double and single bedrooms, living room, kitchen with full-size refrigerator, and a private bathroom. The rooms feature study desks, high-speed internet service, and ample drawer and closet space. In-house facilities include a laundry room, television/DVD lounges and Summer Discovery offices.

Food For Thought

Summer Discovery students eat in the Stetson West dining hall. They receive 2 meals a day, and 1 meal on weekends while on campus. Stetson West features a brick oven, flattop grill, specialty sandwich station and crepes. Gourmet pizzas, calzones, fresh ingredient stir-fry to order, paninnis, a potato bar, specialty sandwiches, crepe’s and salads are among the choices found here. The Curry Student Center offers favorites like Qdoba Grill, Pizza Hut, Au Bon Pain, D’Angelos, Starbuck’s, Taco Bell, Wendy’s and more. Near campus, students will find Whole Foods Market, where they can purchase food to store in their in-suite refrigerators.

Health, Safety and Security

  • The health, safety and security of each student is our primary concern.
  • Doctor appointments are arranged with the Northeastern University Student Health Services.
  • For 24 hour/emergency care, students are taken to the nearby Beth Israel or Children’s Hospital of Boston.
  • Summer Discovery staff make all medical appointments, transport and accompany students to medical facilities, obtain prescription medications and notify parents after medical visits.
  • Summer Discovery resident counselors live in the same secure residence hall as the students.
  • For additional safety, there are daily/nightly sign-ins and room checks.
  • In keeping with a collegiate atmosphere, students are permitted to walk on campus and in our “home area” of Boston, but are required to be in small groups.

Transportation

  • All buildings and facilities on the Northeastern campus are within an easy walking distance of our residence hall.
  • Summer Discovery maintains a fleet of passenger vans for class field trips, small excursions and medical transport. For large group excursions chartered buses with professional drivers are used. Boston’s MBTA commuter line, known as the “T”, is utilized, with supervision, for some off-campus activities.
  • Summer Discovery is pleased to offer assistance in facilitating transportation via car, bus, train or plane. Summer Discovery provides escorted transfers to/from Boston Logan International Airport for $35 each way. Staff meet incoming flights in baggage claim and assist with departures. All plane arrangements are made through Musiker Travel, our own travel agency, at the lowest available fares. If you are being driven to Boston, detailed driving directions are sent approximately one month prior to the program.
