Sports and Recreation

Throughout Cambridge are thousands of acres of manicured green fields, one of the highest concentrations of grass tennis courts on earth, dozens of bicycle paths, and a world famous river that is ideal for punting. The full spectrum of recreational activities that Cambridge has to offer includes several that are typically British. Summer Discovery students can choose from a superb selection of facilities and activities for practicing and playing at no charge (except where noted).

Facilities and Activities

  • Punting (or Rowing) On The River Cam Our annual Summer Discovery “Group Punt” is an excellent group mixer and bonding activity. A great tradition involving a flat bottom boat that is propelled by a pole-wielding student usually short on balance and long on laughter. For those not as adventurous, there are also rowboats and canoes.
  • Cambridge University Exercise Room Exercise Room Want to exercise? No problem! Come down to the Murray Edwards College Exercise Room. Specially equipped with Step-Machines, Stationary Bikes, several Nautilus Machines and a nice collection of dumbbells. A great place to stay in shape!
  • Tennis on All-Weather Courts These new courts are adjacent to our residence hall, and open at any time for practice and play.
  • Glassworks Gym and Sports Hall Excellent indoor facility for basketball, weight training, soccer, volleyball, aerobics, Stairmasters, wall climbing and more.
  • Parkside Pools and Waterslide A larger-thanolympic swimming facility, open seven days a week for aquatics, water sliding and sunning.
  • Murray Edwards Indoor Squash/Racquetball Court Open only for Summer Discovery participants, just reserve your court time at the front desk.

Sports Plus Program

Students who wish to extend their participation beyond the regular recreation and athletic program may choose to participate in one or more Sports Plus offerings. Instruction is given by top college coaches, high school coaches, collegiate athletes and instructors on a regular basis throughout the program. These classes meet after academic classes, and are open to all levels of ability.

Weight Lifting/Conditioning
Learn safe and efficient weight lifting techniques. Use a variety of free weights, Universal machines, Lifecycles, Stairmasters, and other aerobic exercise equipment, at the Glassworks Gym. Meets 2 times weekly for 11/2 hours. Fee: $150

English Football (Soccer)
“GOAL!!” Learn to shoot, score and much more from the coaches of the Cambridge United Football Club. Improve your knowledge and skill level of the most popular sport in the world. The soccer program has personalized coaching from the Cambridge United Football Club coaches. You will engage in game strategy, playing and practice time. Two 2 hour sessions per week. Fee: $195

Rowing The Cam

“Stroke...Stroke...Stroke” yells the coxswain as you row down the River Cam. Immerse yourself in this traditional and fun sport that dates back to the intense rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge and the annual race called “The Bumps.” Rowing is one of the world’s best total body workouts. Meets 2 times weekly for 2 hours. Fee: $295 (Limited Enrollment)

Grand Slam Tennis Lessons
Designed for all levels of play, this tennis intensive course offers you highly personalized small group instruction, a conditioning program, strategy sessions and supervised play. Students will have the opportunity to play on grass courts. Two 11/2 hour sessions per week. Fee: $295

Step Aerobics

Make this class part of your summer workout commitment. Aerobics is easy and fun, and provides a safe and complete fitness workout. You’ll learn the basic steps, techniques and terminology of step and have a great workout. No experience necessary. Meets twice a week for 1 hour. Fee: $125
