Enrichment Classes
Summer Discovery course offerings are designed around the vast resources and personnel available at the University of Michigan and surrounding area. We often use Ann Arbor and its environs as our extended classroom. Field trips related to class topics are an integral part of the academic program. Most classes are small, informal, and personal — encouraging constant student/teacher interaction. Summer Discovery @ Michigan students enroll in 2 enrichment classes for each session they attend. All courses listed meet during the 3-week and 2-week sessions, unless specifically noted. 3-week session classes meet Monday-Thursday. 2-week session classes meet Monday-Friday.
Curriculum A students pick any 1 morning and 1 afternoon enrichment course for each session that they attend. Curriculum B students select an intensive, 3-week or 2-week program in Community Service which meets all day with a break for lunch.
Classes meet for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Most courses require some preparation outside of class, and may have papers and/or tests. In addition, students attend our innovative evening workshop series, “Preparing for College and Life Workshops” which meet 1-2 evenings per week.
Courses for college academic credit are not available at the Summer Discovery @ Michigan program. Please consult with your parents and guidance counselor/college advisor when selecting your courses.
Courses are taught by University professors and staff, graduate teaching instructors, professional artists, and top secondary school teachers. Most of the instructors live in the Ann Arbor area and return year after year. Class size averages between 6-18 students.
These once weekly workshops focus on contemporary issues and skills that are the keys to a productive high school and college career. Designed to help students bridge the gap between high school and college, workshops feature interactive discussions with peers and professionals about college admissions, decision making, tolerance, stress management, harassment, substance abuse, eating disorders, AIDS awareness, and more.
College Visits, College Admissions and Careers We analyze the college admission and application process. Our annual evening with a top official from the U of M Undergraduate Admissions Office, is a program highlight. Visits to other colleges may include Michigan State University, Northwestern University, and the University of Chicago.
Enrichment courses are graded Pass, No Pass. Students receive a Summer Discovery “Certificate of Achievement” and brief teacher evaluations that students can utilize in the future, after completion of the program.
