Summer Discovery course offerings are designed around the vast resources and personnel available at Georgetown and the greater Washington, D.C. area. We often use Washington and its surroundings as our extended classroom. Field trips related to class topics are an integral part of the academic program and include visits to the Washington Post, The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, The Supreme Court and more.
Students selecting Curriculum A may choose any 2 of the Enrichment courses. Students
selecting Curriculum B choose 2 courses in either Law or Government. Note: Curriculum A students may also choose any single Law or Government course.
Although Summer Discovery at Georgetown classes are not for college credit, they will be graded and an official transcript will be sent directly from the Georgetown University Registrars office. This transcript may then be included in the student’s profile for college admissions. Classes meet Monday-Thursday mornings and early afternoons, for 11/2 to 2 hours. Most courses require preparation outside of class.
Courses are taught by University instructors, graduate teaching assistants, area professionals, and top secondary school teachers. Most classes are small, informal, and personal - encouraging constant student/teacher interaction. Class size averages between 8-20 students.
This innovative series takes full advantage of our Washington, D.C. location. Past speakers have included representatives from the CIA, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, The Pentagon, members of Congress, and Holocaust survivors.
These once weekly workshops focus on contemporary issues and skills that are the keys to a productive high school and college career. Designed to help students bridge the gap between high school and college, workshops feature interactive discussions with peers and professionals about college admissions, decision making, tolerance, stress management, harassment, substance abuse, eating disorders, AIDS awareness, and more.
“Preparing for College and Life Workshops” also analyzes the college admission and application process. Our annual college fair with Admissions representatives from many colleges is a program highlight. Our interactive presentations on “Getting Into College” by Summer Discovery Director and Georgetown Law Center Dean of Admissions, Andy Cornblatt is another not-to-be-missed evening. Visits to colleges may include American University, George Washington, George Mason, William and Mary, U. of Richmond, U.S. Naval Academy, U. of Maryland, Johns Hopkins, U. of Pennsylvania, U. of Virginia and NYU.
Enrichment classes meet Monday-Thursday. Fridays are dedicated to visiting the many colleges and universities in the greater Washington/Maryland/Virginia area. Other options include visits to local museums and attractions including Washington highlights that are closed on weekends such as the Bureau of Engraving, Supreme Court, and more.
Courses are graded on the traditional letter system of A, B, C, D, and F, except for the Princeton Review SAT Preparation course. Transcripts are available from Georgetown University for future use. Students receive a Summer Discovery “Certificate of Achievement” at the completion of the program.
