Students are drawn to this picturesque campus on the Potomac River from all 50 states and over 100 countries. According to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, prospective students are attracted to Georgetown University for two primary reasons: “The academic reputation of the University, and the unique benefits of Georgetown’s location.” The remarkable combination of one of America’s oldest and most prestigious universities, as well as the vast resources, culture, and history of the nation’s capital, creates unique opportunities for Summer Discovery students.
Georgetown University was founded in 1789, the same year George Washington became the first U.S. President. Georgetown’s hilltop campus commands the same panoramic views of the Potomac River that it did over 200 years ago. Located in the quaint and famous residential village of Georgetown, the 104-acre campus is a self-contained community which combines academic excellence, superb faculty, cultural diversity, and architectural beauty. Just 1.8 miles from the White House, Georgetown’s proximity to the Capitol Hill area gives students unprecedented access to government and the “movers and shakers” of American and international policy making.
Many Congressmen, Senators and public figures are Georgetown alumni including Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, NBC News correspondent Maria Shriver, NBA Basketball stars Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning and Allen Iverson, and the 42nd President of the United States, Bill Clinton.
Georgetown’s 6,000 undergraduates and 6,000 graduate students attend one of the five undergraduate and three graduate schools. These include the internationally recognized schools of Foreign Service, Business, Medicine, and the USA’s most popular Law School. Outside of class students enjoy “The Big East” spirit of the Hoyas nationally ranked basketball team, access to the 14 museums of the Smithsonian, the largest concentration of libraries anywhere in the world, The Kennedy Center for The Performing Arts, and the trendy cafes, clubs, and shops of downtown Georgetown.
