Boston Business Internships

In Partnership with Northeastern University (Must Enroll prior to May 15)

This unique college credit program gives motivated, mature, independent minded high school students the incredible opportunity to both work in a Boston area business, or non-profits and preparation for college life. Students must be 16 years old by July 5, 2010 to participate.

Northeastern University Cooperative Education staff will manage this program, using their extensive contacts in the Boston business and non profit community to obtain internships for students, maintain relationships with employers, work with students, and prepare for internships.

Northeastern is renowned throughout the world for its Co-op (Cooperative Education) Program. Summer Discovery students have the unique opportunity to partake in a program that has been lauded in U.S. News & World Report America’s Best Colleges as, “Among the worlds largest and most innovative cooperative education programs, an education like no other. Co-op defines the undergraduate experience at Northeastern. Though Northeastern doesn’t require students to take co-op, nearly 90 percent do...half of Northeastern graduates get a job offer from a co-op employer upon graduation.”

Students participate in unpaid internships in a range of fields including:

• Advertising/Marketing • Fashion • Mass Media • Business • Finance • Non-profit • Computer Science • Government • Retail • Dot.coms • Hospitality • Sports • Education • Law • The Arts

This list is subject to revision/change.

Northeastern University Cooperative Education maintains a long list of established partnerships with the following prominent Boston area employers:

• Gillette Company • Charles Hotel • John Hancock • MFS Investment Management • O’Reilly Media • State Representative Timilty • Karmaloop Fashion • Boston Consulting Group • Senator Robert Hedlund • Mayor Menino • New England Medical Center • Boston Scientific • Boston Globe • New England Press Association • Pricewaterhouse Coopers • Center for Sport and Society • Boston Police Department • NextGen Realty • Fidelity Investments • Eduventures, LLC • Filene’s • FlipKey

The list above reflects a small sampling of possible internship placement for students participating in the Boston Business & Internship Institute. Summer Discovery does not guarantee students internship placements in any of the above companies/ organizations.

Week 1: Dynamics of Business or Community Service Internship Training-Camp In 2 separate Training Camps, one for profit and one for non-profit organizations, Northeastern will introduce students to the organizational expectations of a professional work environment through a series of workshops and guest lectures from leading employers. Intensive workshops will also address interview preparation techniques and business etiquette. Upon completion of the course, students will have produced a high quality, achievement-oriented resume reflecting their accomplishments. At the end of the week, students will participate in a meet-and-greet with their employers.

Weeks 2, 3 & 4 For three weeks, four days a week (Monday - Thursday, 9:00am - 4:00pm - times may vary), students will work at their assigned internships. There will be at least 2 or more students placed in each internship that is off campus. Students are expected to contribute to the workplace through projects and assignments, attending meetings, shadowing supervisors and learning about the employer organizations. Students should dress for success, including shirt and tie for men and pants/skirt and blouse for women (clothing list is sent in the spring).

Internship = 3 college credits Students who successfully complete the program will be awarded 3 college credits from Northeastern University. Students are graded satisfactory, unsatisfactory, or incomplete. In addition, they will have received a formal evaluation of their performance from their immediate supervisor.

Internship Requests/Assignments Upon acceptance to the Boston Business & Internship Institute, or DiscoveryWorks Community Service Internship Program, students will be asked to designate their top three choices of internship fields (for Business Internships only) - from the list in column 1. Students will be matched with internship assignments based on a survey they complete, their interests, skills, and the needs of employers. They are assigned a carefully selected internship during the first week of the program. All accepted students are guaranteed an internship. Although most students will secure an internship in one of their top three choices, Northeastern University and Summer Discovery cannot guarantee that this will be possible. Students/parents agree to accept the internship assigned.

Transportation to/from Internships Because of Northeastern’s central location, some students will be able to walk to their internships. Others will utilize Boston’s clean, safe and fast MBTA commuter streetcar/rail transportation system (fare provided). Students may only use the MBTA during the day. Additional van transportation will be provided by Summer Discovery if public transportation is not available to employer sites.

Special Note: Students in this program have the opportunity to fully participate in most Summer Discovery trips, excursions, evening activities, recreation, and residential life, with the exception of optional afternoon activities and the Sports Plus program.
