Over 300 Courses (and Really Great Teachers), plus internships in 5 exciting cities Discovery programs successfully introduce students to the college experience in an environment that is intellectually stimulating, culturally and socially enriching, and fun. Students are treated with the respect they deserve - increasing self-esteem, confidence and independence. Discovery students experience college living and learning - alleviating the anxiety caused by the transition from high school to college life. Most classes are small and stress interactive, experiential learning. Enthusiastic professors, teachers, and academic support staff make learning challenging, meaningful, exciting, and fun.
Students choose from an vast array of enrichment and/or college credit classes on each campus designed to expand horizons and sharpen skills. Also offered is Language and Cultural Immersion in Italy, Spain and China; Discovery Internships; DiscoveryWorks Community Service and Jr Discovery, a more structured program for middle school students.
Student safety, security and health are our primary concerns. Discovery campuses have been chosen for their superb locations, excellent campus security, and major medical centers. Discovery staff accompany students to all medical facilities. Zero tolerance for alcohol and drugs: Use, possession, or attempted purchase of alcohol or drugs will result in dismissal with no refund.
Students often choose how to productively occupy their time after class, choosing from up to 10 daily after-class and evening activities. Discovery staff teach time management skills and provide support, so students can effectively evaluate options and make positive decisions. An important element to college (and high school) success is the ability to balance the academic, cultural, recreational and social aspects of campus life. We will help you succeed.
We let you be yourself. Bring a guitar if you’d like, or an iPod, your sketch book or journal, a baseball glove, lacrosse stick, and your computer. But most importantly, bring an open mind. You will meet and interact with new people from all over the world and enjoy a diverse and fascinating group.
Most students attend alone, so meeting people and making friends is easy. On each campus, all students and staff live in one university residence. This one residence, one community concept fosters greater safety and sociability. Roommates are assigned after students complete a detailed Personal Profile. (Mutual roommate requests are honored.)
Respect for and acceptance of other people’s cultures, ethnicities, and religions, are integral parts of the Discovery experience. Last summer students attended from 43 U.S. states and 39 countries.
Your tuition includes more than just classes, room, and board. Extracurricular activities, excursions, and trips are provided every day, evening, and weekend at no additional charge. All Discovery campuses are superbly located in very close proximity to world-class cultural, entertainment and recreational attractions. (see individual campus sections for specific offerings.)
All admissions, transportation and supervision to/at these activities and excursions are included in your tuition - there is no mandatory drawing account or special events fee. Every day, night and weekend is a special event that’s included in our award-winning programming.
All campuses feature some of the world’s best facilities for practice, intramurals, and pick-up play. Students who wish to extend their participation choose one or more selections from our Sports Plus offerings at Summer Discovery, and Skills for Body at Jr. Discovery. These instructional courses are optional and are taught by college instructors, pros and area specialists.
All Summer Discovery campuses feature a fully operational office in our residence hall for parents to call or email 7 days a week. Student rooms are equipped with a telephone and high-speed internet access on most campuses and students are strongly encouraged to bring laptop computers. Students are required to bring a cell phone on all USA programs, and are provided a cell phone on all international programs.
Students bring comfortable, casual clothes, a notebook and their unique personalities. Suggested clothing and accessory lists are mailed in the spring. Blankets and pillows are provided on almost all campuses and washers and dryers are plentiful. Books and classroom supplies (if needed) can be purchased at the University bookstore.
Summer Discovery is proud to collaborate in a strategic partnership with NY Yankees star Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation. The partnership provides Summer Discovery Program scholarships to members of Jeter’s Leader’s, a youth leadership program run by the Turn 2 Foundation. In addition to the scholarships, Summer Discovery also provides College Readiness Workshops to Jeter’s Leaders members during the year. Jeter’s Leaders was created by Derek Jeter to promote healthy lifestyles, academic achievement, and social change activism among high school students.
